A full small-yard transformation done across three weekends โ gravel path, fresh mulch beds, cedar raised bed, and clean steel edging throughout. Real material costs tracked.
A typical suburban backyard that had been neglected for a few seasons: overgrown grass along the fence line, undefined planting beds with no edging, no clear path to the back corner, and no focal point. Contractor quotes came in at $4,000โ$6,000 for what is essentially cleanup and basic hardscaping.
The approach: prioritize the changes with the highest visual impact per dollar spent, and tackle them one weekend at a time so the project is manageable without hiring out.

Cut clean bed edges using a half-moon edger along all beds. Installed steel edging to hold the edge permanently. Spread 4 cubic yards of wood chip mulch 3 inches deep across all beds. This single weekend transformed the yard's appearance more than any other step โ clean edges and fresh mulch create instant visual structure.
Laid out a 30-foot path from the back door to the corner garden area. Dug 3 inches deep, laid landscape fabric, installed path edging, and filled with pea gravel. Tamped with hand tamper. Simple project that creates clear navigation through the yard and prevents the grass from growing back in that corridor.
Built a 4ร8 ft raised bed in the back corner using cedar 2ร10 boards. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant โ no need for treated lumber that can leach chemicals into edible beds. Used metal corner brackets for clean, square corners. Filled with a mix of topsoil, compost, and perlite. Planted herbs and tomatoes.
